Permanent Account Number or PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric number that is issued by the department of Income Tax. It is mandatory to quote PAN on return of income, all correspondence with any income tax authority. Remember, one can avail of only one PAN. Having more than one PAN is against the law.

Pan is also required while opening bank account, demat account, PAN is a must beyond a specific limit while selling or buying real estate, investing in mutual funds, if one wants to make cash deposit of Rs 50,000 or more into the bank during any one day then PAN card is a must. So you must understand how much a PAN is important in most of financial activities.

In this article I will tell you how easily you can apply PAN can both in offline as well as online mode.

How to apply Pan – Offline Mode:

For offline application you need to fill up “Form 49A – Application for Allotment of Permanent Account Number (PAN)”. The form should be filled in carefully and completely since it may not be possible for the Department to allot PAN if all the details are not filled in.

Step 1 Download the Pan Application Form No. 49A, take a print of it and fill completely with your name, address and relevant information asked.

1. Affixed a Passport Size Photo (signed across on photo)
2. Address proof (you can see the list of valid address proofs while filling up the application form)
3. Identity proof duly self attested with applicant (you can see the list of valid identity proofs while filling up the application form)

Step 2 – Submit the filled application along with application fee through Demand Draft/ Cash of Rs. 96 (inclusive of services tax) to UTITSL pan service centre. (In case of NRI the fee is Rs. 744(exclusive of service tax).

After all this you will get your pan at your address in just 15 to 20 days. In case of any further requirement, you will be communicated vis email, letter to furnish the same.

How to apply Pan – Online Mode:

This is very convenient and easy way of applying pan card if you are tech savvy. It just take less than 15 min to complete the online process. Let us see how you can apply for pan online.

Step 1- Fill up Online Application  First you need to for new PAN application for Indian Citizens (Non-citizens of India should only use this form i.e. Form 49AA with the given guidelines) and extreme below of page you will find a drop down where you can choose whether firm, company or individual. Click on the appropriate option . After selecting the appropriate option, a screen will display i.e. Request for Application for Allotment of Permanent Account Number (see image below).

Fill the all mandatory fields with asterisk (*) mark.

For further assistance you can follow the guidelines and instructions for filling change request form.

After filling the basic complete details you will find at payment details in other details section. Here you can choose the appropriate option such as, Demand Draft/Cheque, Credit Card / Debit Card or Net Banking and proceed.

After making payment through appropriate mode, you will get an acknowledgement form contacting all the details (which you have filled) of yours and payment confirmation details. Save it at your convenient place and print it.

Step 2- Send Acknowledgment – Print the said acknowledgment (sign on the given space as well, alsokeep one photo copy with you as well for further reference) and send it to NSDL at –
‘National Securities Depository Limited, 3rd floor, Sapphire Chambers, Near Baner Telephone Exchange, Baner, Pune – 411045′ along with a below documents;

1. Affixed a Passport Size Photo (signed across on photo)
2. Address proof (you can see the list of valid address proofs while filling up the application form)
3. Identity proof duly self attested with applicant (you can see the list of valid identity proofs while filling up the application form)

On the top of the envelope in which you will be sending this acknowledge you need to write top of it “APPLICATION FOR New PAN REQUEST-Acknowledgment Number.’

Note: Your application should reach at NSDL in 15 days from the date you have submitted the same online.

Once all of the above process is done you should get the pan card in 15 to 20 working days. If it doesn’t reach you in stipulated time you can track your application online with reference of the acknowledgment no.

      Yes, you can apply PAN without surname. If online form doesn’t take the entries then apply offline.
